Ruth’s map of research

October 19, 2011

I’m aware that not everyone is as intimately familiar with the ins and outs of research as I am, and that some of the terminology that we researchers use may be a bit jargon-y for the uninitiated.

How is a person supposed to know the difference between primary and secondary research or between qualitative and quantitative research?  How does it all fit together?

Here is my map of research so you can navigate your way around the terminology.  Some researchers will be generalist and do all of these things, and some will specialise in a sub-set. I consider myself to be a primary research generalist.
